On a highway site in China, seven machines lay asphalt day and night — and nobody sits in a cab. This is smart construction now: one paver pulls a 15.25-metre pass while six driverless rollers follow in lockstep, operators watching screens, not steel. The construction machinery running these live schedules must hold 97% compaction by Friday — not a trade-show demo.

Contractors in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia keep asking us the same thing when they see these clips: is this marketing, or is this what Chinese jobsites actually look like now? Honest answer: it runs, it has been running for a couple of years, and it is quietly changing what "buying construction machinery from China" means at the machine level.

What Is Actually Running on Site

XCMG published the construction machinery numbers for its road fleet on the Guiping Expressway in late 2025, and they are worth reading like a spec sheet:

Why this matters more than the drone footage: compaction is the job where humans vary. A tired operator at 3 a.m. rolls a little too fast, overlaps a little too loosely, and the asphalt layer pays for it for ten years. A coordinated fleet runs the same pass — pass number one and pass number four hundred. The quality is no longer tied to who happens to be in the seat.

SANY — 1,000th electric excavator, 5G remote control in commercial use

In May 2026, SANY rolled its 1,000th electric excavator off the line and confirmed that its 5G remote-controlled excavators are in commercial deployment, alongside autonomous roller fleets in service (reported by IM Mining and PR Newswire). The remote setup holds 120–140 ms end-to-end latency — the machine answers about as fast as you blink — which is how an operator can run a working excavator live from up to 8,500 km away.

For quarry, tunnel and demolition firms that number means something practical: your best operator does not have to be inside the blast zone, the tunnel face or the flood edge to do his job.

Not one company, not one demo

XCMG has walked this road since a robotic walk-behind excavator in 2011, an unmanned roller in 2014 and autonomous dam compaction in Sichuan in 2017. Today, dozens of unmanned construction-machinery projects run across roads, dams and mines in China. One thousand units of a single electric model, and remote machines with paying customers behind them — that is the difference between a flag on a hill and a supply chain.

The Chinese Route: Guided Machine, Then Fleet, Then Remote

Western vendors pioneered 3D machine guidance, and that is still a real strength. What the Chinese construction machinery players did differently was stack three things on top of it and ship them together:

  • Autonomy as a fleet, not a gadget. The paver, the rollers and the plant share one job file. BeiDou RTK positioning gives centimetre-level tracks, and the compaction data logs itself for the consultant.
  • 5G teleoperation. Not self-driving everything — a human in a comfortable chair, anywhere, with the machine’s eyes and hands. Cheaper to deploy than full autonomy and it works today.
  • Electrification as the enabler. An electric drivetrain is far easier for software to meter precisely than diesel-hydraulics. That is why electric, autonomous and remote always appear in the same paragraph — they are one system, not three products.

The result is a definition of smart construction that has moved from "tell the operator the right numbers" to "the machine runs the numbers itself, and the operator supervises three or seven of them."

Why an Overseas Contractor Should Care

You do not need a 15-metre expressway pass for these pressures to bite. Every one of them shows up on ordinary sites from Riyadh to Algiers to Tashkent:

  • Labor. Skilled operators are the bottleneck everywhere. One operator supervising a six-roller train is a labor answer, not a tech party trick.
  • Safety. Remote cabs keep people out of blast zones, tunnel faces and unstable edges — fewer incidents, fewer stoppages, fewer lawsuits.
  • Schedule. Asphalt windows are short and night is cool. Day-and-night operation without a second shift in the cab is where mega-deadlines actually get made.

Buyer Reality Check: Before You Buy Smart Construction

  • Fleet system or assist package? Honest answer: if you own fewer than ten units, 3D-ready grade control and a compaction meter give you 80% of the benefit at a fraction of the cost. The full unmanned train pays off on big road contracts, not on a car-park job.
  • Who supplies the sensor chain when it cracks? Antennas, controllers, harnesses, radios. Iron breaks everywhere; electronics have a second failure curve. Ask who stocks them and how fast they ship.
  • Commissioning and training. How many days, in which language, at your site or theirs? A fleet you cannot commission is a fleet you cannot run.
  • Connectivity reality. No 5G in your desert? Fine — private LTE or a site mesh runs the same remote cab. RTK base or Ntrip, that plan matters more than the cellular logo.
  • Resale in your market. Can your buyers service what you bought? A smart machine with no smart after-sales is just expensive ballast.

What is 5G remote control for, besides headlines?

Do electric machines have a real role on jobsites?
